Posadas

Posadas are a special party were friends and family get together. We celebrate posadas because it's the time when Mary and Joseph were searching for lodging when they went to Belen because of the census. This celebration is before Christmas; it from Dec. 16 to 24.
In a Mexican posada we usually have a piñata that is made up of cardboard and tissue paper and can have many forms. Stars, figures, animals, etc. They are usually filled with candies. The traditional piñata form is a star with 7 spikes and each one represent one sin. Some times the people start the posada with the procession to two houses near where the posada is to take place. For this they divide into two groups. One group is outside and makes a procession to the first house. They carry a Nativity scene of Mary and Joseph.
In the second house the other group is waiting inside. The people outside the house sing:
En nombre del cielo
os pido posada,
pues no puede andar
mi esposa amada.

and the people inside answer singing:

Aquí no es mesón
sigan adelante,
yo no puedo abrir
no sea algun tunante.
They proceed to the next house and ask for lodging again.
The people outside the house sing:
No seas inhumano,
tennos caridad,
que el Dios de los cielos
te lo premiara.
and the people inside answer singing:
Ya se pueden ir
y no molestar
Porque si me enfado
los voy a apalear.
They are denied it a second time. Then they proceed to the house where the posada will take place.
The people outside the house sing:
Mi esposa es María
es Reina del Cielo
y madre va a ser
del Divino Verbo
and the people inside answer singing:
¿Eres tu Jose?
Tu esposa es María?
Entren, peregrinos
No los conocía.
The people inside answer singing and receive them in their home. They break the piñata, sing, eat and be merry. They gather at another house the following night.

The importance of this party is to be with your family and friends. The purpose is to remember the plight of Joseph and Mary when they could not find lodging. This is repeated at different house for nine days.
Here in the AIM, each generation has its own posada and my classmate's mothers give music CDs to remember this great party!!!

Las posadas son fiestas especiales en las que te reúnes con tu familia y amigos. Celebramos esta fiesta porque es cuando Jesus y Maria estuvieron buscando posada en Belén. Esta celebración es antes de Navidad, es del 16 de Diciembre hasta el 24.
En una posada mexicana tenemos una piñata que esta llena de dulces y esta hecha con cartón y papel de china. La tradicional piñata tiene forma de estrella y tiene 7 picos, cada uno representa un pecado.
Para empezar la posada se hace el canto de pedir posada.
En la primera casa se canta:
En nombre del cielo
os pido posada,
pues no puede andar
mi esposa amada.
Les contestan:
Aquí no es mesón
sigan adelante,
yo no puedo abrir
no sea algun tunante.
En la segunda casa cantan:
No seas inhumano,
tennos caridad,
que el Dios de los cielos

Entren, peregrinos
No los conocía. Rezan juntos y después se quiebra la piñata. A veces las personas cantan y juegan juntos. Comen y disfrutan de la familia y amigos.
Lo importante de esta fiesta es que convivas con tu familia y amigos. Aquí en el AIM, cada generación tiene su posada y las mamas de los estudiantes hacen CDS de música y los regalan para que no olvidemos esta gran celebración!!!
